Legislative & Municipal Elections have been Scheduled for September 30

ElectionAccording to a presidential Decree, issued on Tuesday July 2, 2013 by the Head of State His Excellency President Paul Biya, Legislative & Municipal Elections have been convened for Monday September 30, 2013.

The Elections on September 30, 2013 are for the election of members of parliament to the National Assembly and of municipal councilors. It should be noted that Legislative Elections may also be referred to as parliamentary elections.

It is therefore stated on the Official Website of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM)…The Elections and Referendum Management Institution of Cameroon that…”according to the Cameroonian Electoral Code, this invitation to the polls (the Presidential decree) instantly brings to a close the registration on electoral registers that had been re-opened since May 22, 2013”.

ELECAM also states that…“the voter card distribution exercise, on the other hand, goes on, with council branches of Elections Cameroon acting as venue par excellence for any such withdrawal. As a reminder, to get hold of the voter’s card, each elector must go to the ELECAM council branch office in person, taking along his/her National Identity Card or his/her registration receipt”.

About 180 seats are expected to be filled in the National assembly (Parliament), while there are about 9000 Municipal Councilors to be voted in or replaced.

The September polls will follow the senate vote of April 14 that saw the election of members from different political parties into the Cameroon Senate.

As stated on the ELECAM official website, “Municipal councilors are elected for a term of office of five (5) years by universal suffrage and direct and secret ballot and they shall be eligible for re-election”. It adds that…”The election takes place twenty (20) days before the expiry of the term of office of municipal councilors”.

Meanwhile Elections Cameroon, ELECAM will adopt the biometric system of registration on the electoral registers for the upcoming legislative and municipal elections.

It should be noted that legislative and municipal elections originally scheduled for July 2012, February 2013 and July 2013 were postponed to give room for a biometric recompilation of the voters’ list by ELECAM.
