Historical Background

The Ascension is one of the great feasts in the Christian liturgical calendar, and commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into “heaven”. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the 40th day from Easter day.The Christian doctrine of the Ascension holds that Jesus ascended to heaven in the presence of his Eleven Apostles (Judas not present) following his resurrection from the death.

The Ascension Day is alos observed as a Public Holiday in Cameroon as well as Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Indonesia, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Vanuatu . Germany also holds its Fathers’ Day on the same date.
