Diplomatic relations between Cameroon and the Netherlands  were established in 1975. A Cameroon consulate then went into operation.  There has been a number of Charge d’affaires to the Cameroon Consulate in the Netherlands. It should also be noted that for quite some time, the Cameroonian Ambassador to Brussels  was appointed  as Cameroonian Ambassador to the Benelux and European Institutions.

Cameroon as a very important country in West and central Africa does not only have a full Embassy at the Hague  today, but has been blessed by the only female Cameroonian Ambassador serving worldwide at the moment.
Her Excellency Mrs. Odette Melono officially took over office on Wednesday 24 September 2008 thereby becoming Cameroon’s first Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In a historic ceremony at the Noordeinde Palace of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, she presented her credentials to the Queen before embarking on her journey, not only to build a more friendly relationship with the Netherlands, but as well to unite Cameroonians resident in the Netherlands and try to build a stronger bond between them.

She now  holds three records: First,  as the first Ambassador to the Cameroonian Embassy in The Netherlands. Second as the first female Ambassador to the Netherlands and third as the only female Cameroonian Ambassador serving from 2008.

It should be noted that Mrs. Melono is only the third ever Cameroonian female to serve in the rank of Ambassador. The last women that represented Cameroon diplomatically were Madame Simone Marie at the United Nations in 1982-1986 and Madame Isabelle Bassong as Cameroonian Ambassador to the European Institutions in Brussels (1988 to 2006).
