Marcel Niat Njifendji has been Elected Senate President of Cameroon

Hon. Marcel Niat Njifenji (President of the Senate of Cameroon)

Hon. Marcel Niat Njifenji (President of the Senate of Cameroon)

The pioneer senate President of Cameroon is Honourable Marcel Niat Njifendji.  Mr. Niat Njifendji was elected on June 12, 2013 with a majority of 86 votes out of the 100 Senate seats. The much awaited election took place during a closing plenary session of the Upper House at the National Assembly in Yaoundé. Senator Njifenji becomes the second personality of Cameroon in rank and the constitutional successor of the President of the Republic in case of vacancy at the presidency.

Marcel Niat Njifenji was born on 26 October 1934 in Bangangté, in Cameroon’s West Region. He has served as Director-General of the National Electricity Company (SONEL) from May 1974 to April 1984 and again from September 1989 to July 2001. He also served in the government as Minister of Planning and Territorial Administration from 7 September 1990 to 26 April 1991.

The new Senate President was years before appointed Deputy Prime Minister for Mines, Water, and Energy from 9 April 1992 to 27 November 1992.

Also in 1992, Mr. Njifenji was elected to parliament but he did not serve his term since he was already Vice-Prime Minister and General Manager of SONEL. In 2002, Niat Njifenji was elected Mayor of Bangangte (his place of birth). He held this post for five years…until 2007.

It should be noted that before the Senate presidential election on June 12, Fon Victor Mukete (Paramount Chief of the Bafaws in the South West region) was the Provisionary Bureau President of the newly elected Senate. After Senator Niat Njifenji was elected pioneer president, the Eldest Member of Senate, Fon Mukete, who chaired the plenary session, gave up his seat immediately to Mr. Njifenji Marcel.

After taking his seat as president, he then proceeded to chair the election of the 17 member bureau of the senate whose job is to oversee the activities of the senate. Following this election, Sen. SOMELOU Jean (West Region) emerged as the head of the SDF Senate Group while former Prime Minister Peter Mafany Musonge heads the CPDM Senate Group.
