UNESCO and the Diaspora Invest in Cameroonian Youth

This is an initiative in Cameroon that brings together UNESCO, members of the Cameroonian diaspora, and national partners to strengthen young people’s involvement in the water sector. The initiative focuses on:

  • Training young Cameroonians in water sciences, water governance, and civic engagement.
  • Building skills in sustainable water management, leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, and project financing.
  • Encouraging youth participation in decision-making processes concerning water resources in Cameroon.
  • Connecting local youth with expertise and support from members of the Cameroonian diaspora and international organisations.

Key organisations involved

The programme was organised through collaboration between:

  • UNESCO Regional Office for Central Africa,
  • The Cameroonian National Commission for UNESCO,
  • What Water,
  • Jeunesse Émergente et Républicaine du Cameroun (JERC),
  • Cameroon’s ministries responsible for water and youth affairs.

Why it matters

Cameroon faces challenges related to access to clean water, water-resource management, and climate pressures. The initiative seeks to develop a new generation of professionals and community leaders capable of addressing these issues. UNESCO’s broader Youth4Water framework similarly aims to place youth at the centre of water governance, education, innovation, and career development in the sector.

Broader significance

The story reflects a growing trend in which:

  1. International organisations provide technical and educational support.
  2. Diaspora communities contribute expertise, mentorship, and networks.
  3. Young people are viewed not only as beneficiaries but as future decision-makers and innovators in sustainable water management.

In summary, this is an investment in Cameroonian youth as future leaders of the water sector, combining UNESCO’s development agenda with the resources and expertise of the Cameroonian diaspora.
